Nitrate Testing || We baled up some of our winter wheat in June and decided we better nitrate test our bales to make sure they are at safe levels for our cows to consume. Grain forages are at risk for high nitrate levels that can be poisonous to livestock. Nitrates are typically at higher levels in drought years due to stress on the plant. We borrowed a forage core sampler from the county Extension office and took samples from a few different bales. We will take our samples to the Extension office to do a quick nitrate test and if any of the samples come back positive, we will send the samples off to a lab to get further testing to determine the levels of nitrates present. I don't know much about nitrates and ideal times to harvest grain forage, so if you know about this I'd love to learn! Do you test for nitrates in your grain forage? #ranchlife #farmlife #montana #drought #msuextension #ageducation
